...within the first 24 hours of last week's launch of the Xbox 360 sci-fi shoot-em-up Halo 3, more than one million people logged onto Microsoft's Xbox Live gaming service to blow the bejabbers out of each other online, pummelling the servers to a pulp in the process.
Even though Microsoft was braced for the massive spike in online traffic, Xbox Live was overloaded to the point where many players reported problems connecting, erratic behaviour in games and even their Xbox 360 consoles locking up and needing to be reset.
So what do you do when so many people are playing your game that your online network is groaning under the weight? Launch a contest designed to drive even more people online, apparently.
From now until Oct. 27, Canadian Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download special "Gamer Pic" avatars from the Xbox Live service, which automatically enters them in the Canada-exclusive 33 Days Of Halo contest
Each of the three colour-coded Gamer Pics has an associated task and prize draw: download the blue pic and compete in 33 separate Halo 3 multiplayer games for a chance to win a $35,000 Volvo C30 T5; download the white pic and play through Halo 3's story mode cooperatively with three other players for a shot at four special edition Xbox 360 consoles and accessories; or download the red pic and play 33 hours of Halo 3 online for a chance at a 52" Samsung HDTV.
That's 33 hours in total, by the way, not in one sitting.
