Waterloo Region DSB charging $10 more for *extra* field trips

TheRecord.com - CanadaWorld - SUBSTITUTE-TEACHER FEE
The Waterloo Region District School Board is starting to charge high school students who go on trips for the cost of the substitutes who have to fill in for the teachers who go on the trip.

If, for instance, an English teacher takes his class to see a play in Stratford, the students going on the trip will have to pay $10 each, in addition to other fees for the trip, so a supply teacher can cover the classes the English teacher is missing.

The same would apply if a coach takes the basketball team to a special tournament in Brantford. The members of the team would have to pay $10 each in addition to any other fees that would be collected for that tournament.
Schools can charge the fee because field trips are extras, Mackie said.

"We would consider any field trip as essentially an enhancement because there's nothing in the Ontario curriculum that would require a field trip."

Some schools started implementing the policy in September but all principals, trustees and senior staff received a memo about the directive this week.

Some trustees have said they don't like the idea, Mackie acknowledged.

"At this point we're trying to implement it, but it may get reconsidered."

The idea came out of the committee that was meeting last school year to find ways to cut $5 million in overspending from the board budget.
One supply teacher costs $210 a day. (wow, that's a lot of money for one day. - 1rt)
