Iran leader urges police to keep up social vice crackdown

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday urged the police to keep up its crackdown on social vice that has also targeted un-Islamic dress. "The police must strongly press on with the 'social security plan' and avoid seasonal and temporary initiatives so that its goals are implemented in society," state television quoted Khamenei as telling police commanders. Police launched the crackdown in April in a drive to "elevate security in society" with arrests of "thugs", raids on underground parties, seizure of satellite dishes, and street checks of improperly dressed individuals. Thousands of women have been warned for wearing tight, short coats and skimpy headscarves and for flouting the Islamic dress code, which requires every post-pubescent women to cover their hair and body contours.

Nineteen men were hanged in Tehran and Mashhad after being arrested in a sweep on "arazel va obash," a Persian phrase that translates loosely as thugs. It is used for rapists, drug-traffickers and criminals who disturb public security.

Iran's nuclear program "irreversible": Ahmadinejad

Iran's nuclear program is irreversible, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday, voicing continued defiance in the face of possible new international sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

He also insisted that Iran now has 3,000 centrifuges, used to enrich uranium, in its underground Natanz nuclear plant. Enriched uranium can fuel power plants but also, if refined further, provide material for bombs.

Western experts say 3,000 machines running smoothly for long periods at supersonic speed could make enough enriched uranium for an atomic bomb in about a year, if Iran wanted, and form the basis for "industrial-scale" nuclear fuel production.

But an International Atomic Energy Agency report said in August Iran remained well short of 3,000 centrifuges functioning and that its rate of enrichment was still far below capacity.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack could not confirm Ahmadinejad's claim of 3,000 centrifuges in place and said the United States was awaiting an upcoming assessment by the IAEA.

"Whether it is 2,000 or 2,500 or 3,000 or 1,000 centrifuges, the fact of the matter is -- the irreducible fact -- is that they are continuing to defy the international community, that they have refused the offers of negotiation and cooperation," McCormack told reporters.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: ....... I wanted to visit there last year, but there was no time for that. So I decided to visit there this year to pay my respect to the casualties and convey my sympathy to the families. I also wanted to raise several questions and express my views. I wanted to say that in my opinion, this incident is the result of the mismanagement of the world, and the result of the inhuman management of the world. Why did such an incident take place? We need to get to the root causes. We don't want them to turn this incident, in 20 years' time, into another false idol like the Holocaust, which they would use as a pretext to kill peoples, and prevent anybody from opening this [Pandora's] box and examining what really happened in this incident. They might turn 9/11 into something sacred, and whoever does not accept it would be considered an infidel, whereas whoever accepts it would have to accept all the ensuing crimes. In any event, we must express our views. I believe that this way, we would have formed cordial relations with the American people, and cold have opened this issue up for discussion. Well, this is exactly what they want to prevent.

Iran has executed 265 people in the past twelve months in a dramatic increase over the previous year, according to an international human rights organisation.

The International Coalition Against the Death Penalty released the figures on Wednesday saying the figures tallied from the beginning of October 2006 to the end of September this year.

It said the number of executions was far higher than the 140 executions recorded in the previous 12 months.

According to the organisation those put to death included a man stoned for living with a married woman and three women who were hanged. The coalition said 34 of those executed in Iran were political prisoners.

Among those said to be awaiting execution are 11 women sentenced to be stoned, while another 15 are due to be hanged. It says only five are awaiting execution for political crimes in the past year.

Silence in Syria, Panic in Iran.

"Everyone in the government and military can only talk of one thing," he reports. "No matter who I talked to, all they could do was ask me, over and over again, ‘Do you think the Americans will attack us?' ‘When will the Americans attack us?' ‘Will the Americans attack us in a joint operation with the Israelis?' How massive will the attack be?' on and on, endlessly. The Iranians are in a state of total panic."

And that was before September 6. Since then, it's panic-squared in Tehran. The mullahs are freaking out in fear. Why? Because of the silence in Syria.

On September 6, Israeli Air Force F-15 and F-16s conducted a devastating attack on targets deep inside Syria near the city of Dayr az-Zawr.

It is not Israel's silence that "speaks volumes" as he claims, but Syria's. Why would the Syrian government be so tight-lipped about an act of war perpetrated on their soil?

The first half of the answer lies in this story that appeared in the Israeli media last month (8/13): Syria's Antiaircraft System Most Advanced In World. Syria has gone on a profligate buying spree, spending vast sums on Russian systems, "considered the cutting edge in aircraft interception technology."

An F15/16 attack there is not a tiptoe across the border, but a deep, deep penetration of Syrian airspace. And guess what happened with the Russian super-hyper-sophisticated cutting edge antiaircraft missile batteries when that penetration took place on September 6th.

Nothing.

Now you see why the Syrians have been scared speechless. They thought they were protected - at enormous expense - only to discover they are defenseless. As in naked.

Thus the Great Iranian Freak-Out - for this means Iran is just as nakedly defenseless as Syria. I can tell you that there are a lot of folks in the Kirya (IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv) and the Pentagon right now who are really enjoying the mullahs' predicament. Let's face it: scaring the terror masters in Tehran out of their wits is fun.

A sure sign of panic is to make a threat that everyone knows is a bluff. So our and Tel Aviv's response to Iranian bluster is a thank-you-for-sharing yawn and a laugh. Few things rattle the mullahs' cages more than a yawn and a laugh.

Yet no matter how much fun this sport with the mullahs is, it is also deadly serious. The pressure build-up on Iran is getting enormous. Something is going to blow and soon. The hope is that the blow-up will be internal, that the regime will implode from within.

But make no mistake: an all-out full regime take-out air assault upon Iran is coming if that hope doesn't materialize within the next 60 to 90 days. The Sept. 6 attack on Syria was the shot across Iran's bow.

Addressing the western powers, Ahmadinejad said," I ask you, which one is the real Zionist? Are you captives or you are lying and you are the axis of Zionism?"
He added, "This is a serious question, if the Zionists control you, we and the other free nations are ready to help you to make yourself free from this criminal party's captivity and rescue your nations."
Ahmadinejad told western officials, "If you are behind the curtain, declare it. I am asking those governments, who support the Zionists to declare their position. But in any case they should know that they are responsible and are partners of the Zionist regime's crimes."

Iran's president accused Israel on Friday of using the Holocaust as a pretext for "genocide" against Palestinians.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who outraged the West in 2005 by calling Israel a "tumor" to be wiped off the map, said the truth should be told about World War Two and the Holocaust.

Six million Jews were killed in the Nazi genocide.

"Iran condemns fabricating such a pretext (the Holocaust) for the Zionist regime to commit genocide against the Palestinian nation and occupy Palestine," Ahmadinejad said in a live broadcast to mark the annual Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Day in the Islamic Republic.

Ahmadinejad repeated calls for Canada to accept Jews.

"Europeans cannot tolerate the Zionist regime's presence in their own region but want to impose it on the Middle East. Give them (the Jews) this vast land of Canada and Alaska to build themselves a home and resettle there," he said.
