Danger: Beware of Falling Cows
Charles and Linda Everson were driving back to their hotel when their minivan was struck by a falling object—a 600-pound cow.
The Eversons were unhurt but the cow, which had fallen off a cliff, had to be euthanized. The year-old cow fell about 200 feet from the cliff and landed on the hood of the couple's minivan, causing heavy damage
A Chelan County fire chief, Arnold Baker, said the couple missed being killed by a matter of inches in the accident Sunday on a highway near Manson.

Remember To Set Your Clocks Back One Hour
abc7news.com: Remember To Set Your Clocks Back One Hour

It's time once again to reset the clocks and savor an extra hour of slumber as daylight saving time comes to an end a week later than usual.
Daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 a.m.
Because of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time started three weeks early and ends a week later this year as part of a federally-mandated effort to reduce energy consumption.
The effort may be in vain according to some.
The new time change schedule has thrown people off and even computers have needed help, with many automatically switching back a Sunday too early.
During the March time change Microsoft worked to mitigate confusion and problems by issuing a patch and adding automatic updates.
Ryan Kellogg, a Ph.D. student and researcher at University of California, Berkeley's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, said that a study he co-authored on energy consumption in Australia in 2000 shows little difference in electricity use between two neighboring states, only one of which adopted daylight saving time.
The 2005 policy, Kellogg said, is based on energy use patterns in the U.S. during the oil crisis of the early 1970s, when a recession and other conservation efforts may have contributed to a drop in electricity use.
"This really doesn't make a difference," Kellogg said about the extended daylight saving time and energy conservation. "I'm pretty skeptical there's going to be a benefit. Microsoft has had to issue patches, these things cost money. This is something we should stop tinkering with."

Mythical, Bloodsucking Chupacabra Found in Texas Just a Coyote
Mythical, Bloodsucking Chupacabra Found in Texas Just a Coyote
The results are in: The ugly, big-eared animal found this summer in southern Texas is not the mythical, bloodsucking chupacabra. It's just a plain old coyote.
Biologists at Texas State University announced Thursday night they had identified the hairless doglike creature.
KENS-TV of San Antonio provided a tissue sample from the animal for testing.
"The DNA sequence is a virtually identical match to DNA from the coyote," biologist Mike Forstner said in a statement. "This is probably the answer a lot of folks thought might be the outcome. I, myself, really thought it was a domestic dog, but the Cuero Chupacabra is a Texas Coyote."

One Great Dog!
Rachel Lucas » Blog Archive » Do I need to take Sunny to West Virginia?
Sphere: Related Content
I blog about Sunny too much, don’t I? You can handle it. If you recall from The Great Pit Bull Incident, Sunny is one hell of a fierce bitch. She showed her mettle again this past Tuesday as we were walking the dangerous streets of our dangerous loose-dog-filled neighborhood.
There we were, traipsing along innocently, me, Sunny, and Digger. We rounded a corner and up ahead I saw a couple of kids in the middle of the street, playing on their bikes. Then I saw their dog, who then saw me and my dogs, and it was ON.
He was 50 yards away at least, but the moment that dog saw us, he started charging our way at top speed. Which told me we had a Situation on our hands, because you do not sprint aggressively towards Sunny. She will bite a hole through your face.
As soon as I saw the other dog running towards us with intense menacing purpose (he was very obviously NOT coming to play or sniff), I stopped our forward movement and attempted to verbally soothe my beasts. YEAH RIGHT. Who was I trying to kid? You can talk all you want about having “control” over your dogs but I’m not Cesar Fuckin’ Milan, okay? My dogs see a strange dog bolting towards them top speed and barking aggressively, they don’t give one tiny little SHIT what the human thinks about it. They are going to fuck that dog up. And do you know what? I don’t blame them. For all I know, that dog wants to feast on my organs.
Anyway. Both of my dogs were pulling on their leashes with great intensity as the strange dog charged us. I had about 5 seconds to decide whether to let go of the leashes or not. If I let go, I open myself up to liability if anything bad happens to the other dog or the kids (who were chasing their dog by this point). If I don’t, I’ve got 170 pounds of canine fury tethered to my left hand in the middle of a 3-way dog battle. Jesus Christ.
I didn’t let go. I couldn’t turn and try to run, either, as that’s just about THE stupidest thing to do when a dog is after you. Not to mention the fact that there’s no miracle under the sun that could have persuaded my dogs to retreat with me. So I held the leashes and we stood our ground, and do you remember the Battle of Pelennor Fields from the LOTR-Return of the King movie? The part where the Riders of Rohan (and yeah, I still want Eomer’s babies) charge toward the Orc army and when they reach them THEY DO NOT EVEN SLOW DOWN? They just fuckin’ HIT.
That’s what it was like on Tuesday evening. The strange dog (which by now I could see was a 100+ pound short-haired Lab of some sort who was several inches taller than Sunny and way, way, way, way more muscular) crashed full-speed into Sunny, who was so very, very ready for it. She caught him right in the throat with her open jaws. He yelped, she let go, but he did not even think about backing down. Digger, elderly though he may be, was pretty fucking pissed off, too, and he tried getting in on the action, which immediately got him knocked down, hard.
Which is when I got absolutely bloodthirstily ENRAGED. There I am, holding two leashes on two big dogs, one of them in a cage match with a 100-pound psycho and the other one laying on his side whimpering and getting stomped on. All because some ASSHOLES think it’s okay to let their huge, aggressive dog run free. Run free! Are you freakin’ KIDDING me?
So do you know what I did? Sunny had the monster under control in a snarling, biting, chaotic-yet-beautiful-in-its-brutal-efficiency way, so I quickly helped Digger up and then I did something I’ve never done before: I physically assaulted an animal. Still holding both leashes in my left hand, I threw my right arm out for balance, pulled my right leg back, and then kicked that shithead as hard as I could right in the ribs. He pulled back from Sunny a little and I did it again, this time in his skull. I WAS SO PISSED. Sunny stopped snarling and biting long enough to look up at me, like, did you just DO that? Holy shit, human! Let’s kill this bastard together!
The lab ran a few yards away to gather his wits. The kids finally got to the battle zone and I yelled at them to get back. The little girl was actually about to try to grab her dog. Fool! She was maybe 5 years old. FINALLY around the corner comes Dad, who races to the scene and seizes his piece of shit dog. Who broke free and came at us again but that was a very bad idea, because by that time, I was between him and Sunny, and she thought he was coming for me, and have you ever seen an obese dog move with the speed of light? It’s really quite remarkable. She literally leapt through the air in front of me to intercept the lab. Her fury was at Defcon 5 level and she hurt that dog. I didn’t see blood but he was whimpering and limping a little. He finally gave up and his owner got control of him.
And that’s that. The dad apologized profusely and yelled at his kids that they were in SERIOUS, SERIOUS TROUBLE! and I think he meant it. As we walked away, I heard him telling the boy that this is why! I told you to never let him out off leash! I TOLD YOU AND THIS IS WHY!! Someone could have gotten hurt! You apologize to the lady! So I was cool with that. At least Dad has a clue and I doubt his kids will ever let the dog out loose again.

Combining workstations and treadmills.

A number of employers apparently are willing to let their workers walk. Steelcase Inc. says many companies have expressed interest in its newest product, which combines an office workstation with a treadmill so workers can burn calories while earning a paycheck.
The nation's largest office furniture maker will begin taking orders for its Walkstation beginning Nov. 19.
"What we have done is taken science from the lab to a product that could potentially help millions and millions of people," Walkstation developer James Levine told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Thursday. "I think it's the next iPod. Everybody is going to want one."

More Halo 3 news
TorontoSun.com - Other News - Halo 3 attacks Internet
Sphere: Related Content
...within the first 24 hours of last week's launch of the Xbox 360 sci-fi shoot-em-up Halo 3, more than one million people logged onto Microsoft's Xbox Live gaming service to blow the bejabbers out of each other online, pummelling the servers to a pulp in the process.
Even though Microsoft was braced for the massive spike in online traffic, Xbox Live was overloaded to the point where many players reported problems connecting, erratic behaviour in games and even their Xbox 360 consoles locking up and needing to be reset.
So what do you do when so many people are playing your game that your online network is groaning under the weight? Launch a contest designed to drive even more people online, apparently.
From now until Oct. 27, Canadian Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download special "Gamer Pic" avatars from the Xbox Live service, which automatically enters them in the Canada-exclusive 33 Days Of Halo contest
Each of the three colour-coded Gamer Pics has an associated task and prize draw: download the blue pic and compete in 33 separate Halo 3 multiplayer games for a chance to win a $35,000 Volvo C30 T5; download the white pic and play through Halo 3's story mode cooperatively with three other players for a shot at four special edition Xbox 360 consoles and accessories; or download the red pic and play 33 hours of Halo 3 online for a chance at a 52" Samsung HDTV.
That's 33 hours in total, by the way, not in one sitting.

Microsoft said U.S. sales of the video game Halo 3 totaled $170 million in the first 24 hours after its release.
Within the first 20 hours, more than 1 million Xbox Live members went online to play the game, making Sept. 25 the most active Xbox Live gaming day in history, the company said.
More than 1.7 million copies of Halo 3 were preordered in the U.S. before the game went on sale earlier this week. "Halo 3 has become a pop-culture phenomenon," said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, in a statement.
